When you are out shoveling the driveway, if you have a fire hydrant, please clean around it and from it to the street. the closest one to my house is two houses away. That person never clears a path to it. Today I could only see the top part of it, the parts where the hoses hook up were under the snow. So for another year I get to walk down the road, and scoop snow. Use some common sense people.

Thanks

We have 8” of snow, and the forecast calls for 10” to 14” total by morning. Plus 40mph winds and zero visibility! This weather is actually fun when you don’t have to drive in it, and thankfully I don’t have to drive to work tonight. They called me around 5:30PM and said they were closing, so don’t come in tonight.

Guess I will be on the computer and watching the blizzard tonight. Hope everyone is warm.

I finally got started in a 4th ed D & D campaign! I haven’t had the chance to play any pen and paper games in a long time, due to my working third shift. This group actually has two other guys I work with, and we all have Sundays open for gaming, so it should work out pretty well. So far we have just had one session, but it went very well, and was a lot of fun.

I am playing a fighter witch is rather unusual for me, since I usually go for casters. I really like how they changed the fighter class, by adding at will, encounter, and daily abilities like the other classes. Now instead of just stepping in and hitting the bad guy, I feel like there is actually some strategy involved. Getting to pick the fighting style for each attack is pretty fun.

The DM is someone my friends met at the local game shop, I think he will work out well. He has already asked for character bios, and histories, so he can incorporate us fully into his campaign.

Really looking forward to it in the coming months.

1. Web server upgrade failed, I and another guy from work were up till 5:00AM on a Sunday getting it back up.
2. SUV ran a stop light in front of my VW Bug $2,100 in damage. He got a ticket and his insurance paid for it.
3. My brother-in-law broke his neck, by jumping into a lake from a ledge (Don’t get me started.). That was a 28 hour day surgery went OK, and he is up and about, though he may never regain full mobility in his right leg.
4. One of my Aunts had a stroke. No paralysis, no slurred speech, but she has an irregular heart beat now that the doctors can’t figure out.
5. I was summoned for jury duty.

I have been reading everyone’s posts, I just haven’t been posting, or commenting, sorry. Not really busy, mostly enjoying the summer. I finally joined the current generation of console gaming. it just took three years for me to do it. I went with the X-Box 360, but I have conflicting feelings about it. I am 100% satisfied with it, but it is from Microsoft, I’m terribly confused by this.

I actually got it for Netflix streaming, which is very nice, as there is a ton of Anime available. The games are fun to, so far I have played The Force Unleased, and downloaded the Jade Empire from the online stores original X-box games. Bioware made Jade Empire, and ported it to the PC, but I have never liked playing games meant for a console on the PC, as the controls always seem off.

I picked up a TV Tuner card for my PC, so now I can extend Vista Media Center through the X-Box to my TV. It’s nice to finally be able to record live TV again, I haven’t had a way to do that since 2000. My VCR is ancient, and I never wanted to buy a Tivo, or invest in building a dedicated media center computer. It is even better since I found Life Extender, a MC plugin that auto removes all the commercials.

Work is, well, work. Nothing major going on there, except next week we start having classes to learn how to relate to customers. We were secret shopped by a company the boss hired. They compared us to our competitors in the area, and apparently we come across as rude and we look down upon our customers. On the other hand, we came across as the most knowledgeable and experienced, we also did the best work of the stores tested. I suspect the good and bad are related as everyone at work is dedicated to technology, and tends to avoid social activities. In other words given the choice of going out and clubbing, or staying at home and tearing computers apart, everyone at work would choose the later.

I know I always feel uncomfortable in new social settings, and nervous when meeting new people. I prefer to stick to the things, and people I know, rather then trying new activities and meeting new people. I suspect most people in technical fields are similar, and all have some social anxiety, I know I do.

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you?...

Michael Moorcock (b. 1939)

9 High-Brow, 5 Violent, -9 Experimental and 27 Cynical!

Congratulations! You are High-Brow, Violent, Traditional and Cynical! These concepts are defined below.

Michael Moorcock is one of the most influential fantasy writers of all times, his impact rivalling that of Tolkien’s. Perhaps China Miéville described it best when he said: “I think we are all post-Moorcock.” Apart from being the editor of New Worlds twice in the 60s and 70s, thereby being instrumental in bringing on the so-called “new wave” of science fiction which changed all fantastic literature forever, Moorcock’s own work has been an inspiration to more recent writers. He is also known for not hiding or blunting his views on fiction which he regards as inferior, a trait which has lead him to apply harsh criticism on authors such as J R R Tolkien, C S Lewis an H P Lovecraft.

His most popular work are the Elric books. Elric was originally conceived as a sort of critical comment to or even parody of R E Howard’s Conan, but the character and his world soon grew to form a tragic and somewhat fatalistic drama. Elric’s world is, in turn, only a small part of the huge Multiverse, a set of stories from all sorts of worlds (including our own) which is forever locked in a struggle between the two powers of Law and Chaos. Whenever one of these powers is threatening to become too powerful, an incarnation of the Eternal Champion, a group of warriors possessing the same spirit, is forced to fight to maintain the delicate balance between the two. Moorcock has worked several of his heroes into this cycle of books, including Hawkmoon, Corum and, of course, Elric.

Moorcock’s stories are often stories about warriors, however reluctant they may be, and are usually explicitly violent, even if the purpose of all the hacking and slashing is to free humans and other beings from oppression and, ultimately, fear. There is little happiness, though, for those who are forced to do the fighting and all they can hope for is a short time of respite, sometimes in the town of Tanelorn, the only place in the multiverse that the eternal struggle between Law and Chaos can’t reach.

It should also be mentioned that, even though Moorcock has done quite some experimenting in his days, it can’t be ignored that a major part of his books are traditional adventure stories that become more than that by their inclusion into a grand vision. A little ironically , perhaps, for an author who has criticized the “world-building school” of fantasy, Moorcock achieves much of his popularity through building, if not a world, a world vision.

You are also a lot like China Miéville

Your score

This is how to interpret your score: Your attitudes have been measured on four different scales, called 1) High-Brow vs. Low-Brow, 2) Violent vs. Peaceful, 3) Experimental vs. Traditional and 4) Cynical vs. Romantic. Imagine that when you were born, you were in a state of innocence, a tabula rasa who would have scored zero on each scale. Since then, a number of circumstances (including genetic, cultural and environmental factors) have pushed you towards either end of these scales. If you’re at 45 or -45 you would be almost entirely cynical, low-brow or whatever. The closer to zero you are, the less extreme your attitude. However, you should always be more of either (eg more romantic than cynical). Please note that even though High-Brow, Violent, Experimental and Cynical have positive numbers (1 through 45) and their opposites negative numbers (-1 through -45), this doesn’t mean that either quality is better. All attitudes have their positive and negative sides, as explained below.

High-Brow vs. Low-Brow

You received 9 points, making you more High-Brow than Low-Brow. Being high-browed in this context refers to being more fascinated with the sort of art that critics and scholars tend to favour, rather than the best-selling kind. At their best, high-brows are cultured, able to appreciate the finer nuances of literature and not content with simplifications. At their worst they are, well, snobs.

Violent vs. Peaceful

You received 5 points, making you more Violent than Peaceful. Please note that violent in this context does not mean that you, personally, are prone to violence. This scale is a measurement of a) if you are tolerant to violence in fiction and b) whether you see violence as a means that can be used to achieve a good end. If you are, and you do, then you are violent as defined here. At their best, violent people are the heroes who don’t hesitate to stop the villain threatening innocents by means of a good kick. At their worst, they are the villains themselves.

Experimental vs. Traditional

You received -9 points, making you more Traditional than Experimental. Your position on this scale indicates if you’re more likely to seek out the new and unexpected or if you are more comfortable with the familiar, especially in regards to culture. Note that traditional as defined here does not equal conservative, in the political sense. At their best, traditional people don’t change winning concepts, favouring storytelling over empty poses. At their worst, they are somewhat narrow-minded.

Cynical vs. Romantic

You received 27 points, making you more Cynical than Romantic. Your position on this scale indicates if you are more likely to be wary, suspicious and skeptical to people around you and the world at large, or if you are more likely to believe in grand schemes, happy endings and the basic goodness of humankind. It is by far the most vaguely defined scale, which is why you’ll find the sentence “you are also a lot like x” above. If you feel that your position on this scale is wrong, then you are probably more like author x. At their best, cynical people are able to see through lies and spot crucial flaws in plans and schemes. At their worst, they are overly negative, bringing everybody else down.

Went and saw this last night with a friend who isn't a Star Trek fan. We both thought it was excellent. I think it is the best Trek movie yet made. They used a plot device I usually despise, but this time it worked, and I would say it was needed to make the story less predictable.

The actors were all good, particularly the one playing Kirk, his portrayal was very enjoyable. The special effects were great, if a little crowded in some spots. I'm looking forward to the sequel they have planned. Well worth the twenty dollars, for ticket and refreshments.

They played a preview for GI Joe, the first one I had seen for that movie. I won't be going to theaters to see it, as it looks very stupid. Christopher Eccleston is playing Destro in it, so I will probably watch it when it comes out for rental. I did find it amusing that the actress who plays Scarlett also plays a green alien woman in Star Trek. Though I had to confirm it using Google, after seeing the movie.

Hope everyone is well.

Watched a matinee showing of it with friends. We all had the same feeling, meh. It wasn’t great it wasn’t horrible. Parts of it were good, but mostly it was to long, and didn’t really tell much of a story. The action scenes were OK, but I felt they were over done, to much acrobatics. I had read Weapon X, the comic origin of the character, the movie didn’t follow that very much, and it completely skimmed over his early life.

They had some interesting additions of classic Weapon X characters, which was nice to see. They had my favorite character as well, but they made him silly, and screwed up his power. He is the guy that is in the final fight, and he isn’t done at all like the comics.

I don’t regret spending the money to see it, but I am glad I paid the matinee price.

I found a new place to eat Saturday, called Fat Tuesday. A small locally owned New Orleans style place. The food was great, I ordered the oyster Po’ Boy sandwich. I was surprised that they used fresh shelled oysters for the price they charged. I could see them shelling them behind the counter. They dipped them in some kind of corn meal and fried them. It was one of the best sandwich’s I have ever had. I also tried a sample of the red beans and rice, also quite good, and it will be the next meal I get. My friend got the gumbo and the jalapeno cornbread, he was also pretty happy with the food. They had a New Orleans beer called Voodoo, I had never heard of it before, but it went well with the dinner.

The place was pretty small and unassuming, but every meal on the menu was $10 or less, so they are passing the savings of the building to the customer. They don’t have a very large menu selection, but they do have different menus for Saturday and Sunday. I assume it is their way to cut waste and cost. They have only been open for six weeks, and I really hope they make a go of it, because I intend to make it a regular stop.

For some reason I haven’t found an answer to this, so I am hoping one of the few people who read this knows.

If a program requires .net2, will .net3.5 meet the need or do you actually need .net 2 as well.

In other words are all of the resources from previous versions of .net included in the newest versions?

Wanted to let the few people who read this know I am still around, and have been reading their LJ's. Have been very busy with work, our business has actually tripled with the recession. I guess people feel like getting things repaired now instead of buying new. Managed to play some Dungeons & Dragons with some friends. We have actually managed to get five sessions in, which is amazing considering we all have different work schedules, and some of them have changing schedules. So far we have all been able to get together on Sunday evenings, hopefully it will last for a while.

Doing some maintenance on my Linux box today. I am in the process of changing all of my storage drives to LVM, and adding in a new drive. Once I'm finished I should have 3TB, Hopefully that will last me out the rest of the year. I have been purchasing used DVD's cheap and ripping them into Xvid format, so I can just stream all of them through the AppleTV & Boxee. Works great but takes a lot of storage when you buy TV shows. I have almost everything ripped now, just need to finish the last disk of Quantum Leap.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Work
Well this week I start training someone on third shift. Then after thirty days I will be moved to day shift, which is good, but it comes with a trade off, I will have to work weekends. I believe my new schedule will be Saturday through Tuesday. Thirteen hours on Saturday, and then nine hours on the other three days. Unfortunately I will be working till eight every night, but at least most of the people I know are up till midnight, so I can actually see them.

Really liking the new TV, I have started hooking my laptop up to it and watching TV from Hulu. The Macbook has Bluetooth built in and I already had a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, so I can just set back and navigate from a distance. The shows actually look pretty good in full screen hi res playback. Been watching Alf right now, the show is more corny than I remember from seeing it as a kid, but it is still funny.

I used to love GI Joe, and Transformers. In fact I still have some of my favorite ones such as the Cobra Trouble Bubble and the Autobot Jetfire. In fact I still love toys, just bigger and more expensive ones. I was planning on purchasing an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 this weekend. I finally decided on the PS3 and linking it up with my Vista computer as a media center extender, and a way to play games. Then I got to thinking what’s the point without an HDTV? So instead of $400 I spent far more on a new TV. I found a returned one at the local Best Buy, and it was still under full warranty, since it was open box they knocked off $500. It is an absolutely beautiful Samsung 40” LCD 1080P and best of all 120htz instead of 60htz. Hell of a difference from a 27” Zenith tube standard definition. I hooked up my laptop with HDMI and started watching the HD version of Iron Man from the iTunes store WOW. I feel like I have never seen TV before, these things look even better with Blue Ray, so I will eventually get the PS3.

When I was buying the TV I noticed I didn’t have my phone with me. No biggie I probably left it on the charger. Got home unloaded the TV (It actually fit in the bug very well with the back seats folded down) checked the charger, no phone. Then I remembered I had the phone in my pocket that morning, then I showered, I changed cloths, I started washing a load of clothes....

Then I went back to Best Buy and bought a new phone.

I haven’t posted in a long time but I have still been reading journals. Been very busy of late, in fact this is my first day off in two weeks. We finally moved the office from the temporary location after the flood, to the new store. The place is very nice, and closer to my home than the temporary office was. The new place is twice the size of the old one, we have been there now for one week and still have a lot to do, but are making consistent process. We also hired two new people last week so that should help with getting time off a bit more regular. This Thursday is going to be an open house for the public, and I am required to be there. Unfortunately that means coming into work six hours early, which means a sixteen hour shift for me, hip hip hooray!

The VW is running well, but I have apparently blown a speaker in the back. To much Dropkick Murphy’s I suppose. I really didn’t think I have ever had the sound that loud but I have driven a lot on the interstate with the windows down, and with all of the wind noise, had the sound up to hear it. I have a friend who used to install car audio systems for a living, so I will probably get a replacement speaker online and buy him dinner for the trouble. Of course it may not be to difficult for me to do, just need to find some time to look at it.

Been working a lot lately and haven’t had much time to post. Downloaded Joost to try it out. It uses P2P technology to stream ad supported television shows. The ads are in the show like broadcast TV except they are far fewer. It isn’t to bad but I probably won’t keep it, though it has been fun to watch old GI Joe episodes. I used to watch them as a kid, and the nostalgia factor is good. They are pretty silly from an adult perspective, which actually makes them pretty amusing. I may have to watch some of the Transformer cartoons as well.

So one of the other managers got a new car this week, and decided to take a road trip with it this weekend. Nice plan it is what I would do. He asked if I wanted to come along visit some casinos, and take in the sites. I declined as I wasn’t really in the mood to lose any money.

Anyway he seems to be the favorite person the boss calls on weekends to put out various fires that pop up. Apparently he forgot to bring along his laptop on this trip, hmmm, for some reason I don’t think “forgot” is the correct word. By Saturday he was already out of the state, and I received my first phone call from the boss, which of course woke me from a sound sleep. I received three more calls Saturday, and two this morning already. The first at 3:00AM, and this last one at 5:00AM, three hours later this last one is now fixed. Funny how most weekend emergencies happen when most people are sleeping.

It is kind of a nice warm fuzzy feeling knowing that out of all the other people my boss could call, he trusts me and my abilities to get the job done. Of course my bed has a nice warm fuzzy feeling as well, and I tend to prefer it over approval from the boss. So lesson learned, when the bosses right hand man leaves town, and asks you to come along, say yes, and “forget” the laptop at home.

Just got back from the theater, $8.50 for a matinee, $12.00 for a hot dog, soda, and small popcorn. The movie wasn’t bad, but not as good as the first one. The main problem was the villain, he was far to likable. though he had some cool bladed weapons. Last week I saw Hancock I actually liked it more, even with the plot change in the middle.

In other news the company I work for signs a lease for new offices tomorrow, unfortunately we can’t move in till mid August. We are having the interior remodeled to suit our needs. Quite a bit more space available to us, apparently we are even going to have a kitchen, which will be rather nice. All we had before was a microwave and a coffee pot.

Otherwise I have just been working all the time, and slowly converting my DVDs to AVI files. That will be nice when it is done, then I can just access my movies with the remote, and no longer have to feed them into the player. I have been reading everyones journal’s, but haven’t had time to comment. Hope everyone is well.

This was the first full weekend I had off since my workplace flooded, and I made the most of it. Saturday was spent with friends, we went to a steakhouse called Rubes. Kind of weird place you pick a raw cut off meat then cook it yourself. It was all right, but I feel if I am paying for food at a restaurant they should cook it for me.

Later I hooked up some other friends and went to a couple of bars, something I haven’t done for some time. I even stayed till last call. Today I went looking for an Asus EEE laptop, unfortunately the only Best Buy that had any in stock was in Waterloo, and I didn’t feel like driving 2+ hours to check it out. Hopefully they will get some more in this week. I don’t really have a use for one, but wanted to check it out, especially the Linux one
